It's responsive but not quick, smooth by subcompact standards but not luxurious. Everything in the cabin is intuitive and easy to operate. It's an attractive design and the materials look nice. the 2012 accent looks sportier and more modern than last year's version. The 2012 accent features hyundai's new design theme shared with sonata and elantra models. for 2012, the body was reshaped with more flowing lines and more sculpted sheetmetal. The 2012 accent looks like a smaller version of the new elantra. The accent's new body shape carries a low coefficient of drag, 0. 30, which helps with wind noise and fuel mileage. The designers chose to go with body color everywhere, from bumpers to mirrors to handles, with black accents and design elements, so there is almost no chrome trim on the new car beyond the grille bar. The engine is rated at 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. The new engine is 40 pounds lighter than the previous engine. Outward vision is excellent. The instrument panel, center stack, vents, switches and controls have all been redone for the 2012 accent models and it's all easy to look at and operate. The instrument package contains the usual two round gauges with digital readouts and indicators between the deeply tunneled clusters and is bathed in ice blue light at night. the three-spoke steering wheel has a thick rim and a thickly padded hub. Lower models have urethane-covered steering wheels, upper models have leather-wrapped wheels with convenient switches for the sound system on the left, cruise control system on the right, and telephone on the lower left. as for storage, the rated cargo capacity of the hyundai accent is 21. 2 cubic feet behind the folding second-row bench seat, and 47. 5 cubic feet with the second seat folded flat. Door and console storage is generous, and the new accent has a sliding console armrest, unusual in this class. in the center binnacle, there is a usb port, an aux port, and the two combine to make a port for an ipod cable, a very clever arrangement. The new engine is smooth and quiet, and runs at about 2200 rpm at 70 mph in sixth gear, and about 4400 rpm at 100 mph. The thrifty, gutty little gamma engine is surrounded by helpers like electric power steering, low-rolling-resistance tires, lighter elements throughout the engine bay and the rest of the vehicle. it all adds up to accent's 28/37 mpg epa mileage rating city/highway. the 6-speed automatic transmission performed quickly and quietly. the 6-speed manual gearbox is easy to shift and the clutch pedal was light and easy to operate. We did not care for this and generally find shift lights distracting. going down the road, the accent is far smoother and quieter than we were expecting it to be. A more-rigid chassis, stronger steel, more and better sound insulation and better door seals show in the car's quiet highway behavior. we found the accent responds relatively quickly, has good tracking, relatively quick response, and good feel on center. Bump, rut and pothole damping is very good. Roll control on twisty mountain and desert roads was very good, and the car stayed put pretty well in hard corners. Back-seat passengers will find rear-seat leg room as good as that in larger cars and suvs. And it delivers an epa-estimated 31 mpg on the highway with an automatic, 33 mpg with a manual transmission. the versa competes with the lower priced toyota yaris and the more expensive honda fit, but it is slightly bigger than either. All three are subcompacts designed with tall rooflines for increased interior comfort and visibility. For 2008, a sport package is available for both the sedan and hatchback, consisting of front and rear spoilers, lower body side sill extensions, and fog lights. bottom line, the nissan versa is a big small car with comfort, performance and versatility. The hatchback also features a 60/40 split folding rear seat. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) are an option 250) on all models and we recommend getting it. walkaroundthe nissan versa looks bigger than it is. Similarly, a tall, steep windshield aids space efficiency in the van and in the versa as well. it's very different at the versa's near-vertical rear, where the little nissan almost looks like a hatchback bmw never built. The bottom edges of the tailgate angle sharply inward to clear the cat's-eye taillights. We're guessing it was designed this way to allow those trapezoid taillights to stay on the body rather than being mounted on the tailgate itself. It gives the rear end a unique character, though the tailgate opening is smaller than it otherwise could be. the sedan is nearly seven inches longer than the hatchback and has a more conventional rear end. The sedan is handsome enough, with its long, tapering sail panels. we find the hatch more appealing. We like its distinctive styling and find it more versatile than the sedan. interiorthe huge front seats in the nissan versa are roomy and comfortable. As with the other cars in this class, the versa driver gets lots of legroom and headroom. In terms of hip room, however, the versa is a real standout. The width and the substantial structure of the front seats may make the versa a great choice among subcompacts for big drivers. the cloth-covered seats are comfortable without being too soft and offer plenty of side support. the back seat is particularly impressive. Even a six-footer shouldn't feel cramped as the rear seat legroom is best in its class and, at 38 inches, is within half an inch of the toyota camry, an inch more than in the ford explorer, and only an inch and a half short of a chevy suburban. Indeed, the versa's rear-seat legroom is more generous than in any other vehicle in nissan's lineup, except for the humungous armada suv. No hard plastics here. the instrument pod contains three large, well-recessed gauges that are easy to read. The speedometer takes pride of place in the center and almost seems as if it is floating over the other two gauges. controls for the dash mounted radio and cd changer are well integrated into the center stack, and although they are not very large they are easy to see and comprehend. There is a large volume knob in the center with a very visible power button. Three functional, conventional knobs operate the climate control system. All in all there's nothing fancy about any of the controls, although everything looks well finished. Two large cupholders are conveniently located under the center stack. the optional intelligent key allows for keyless starting of the engine, something that up until now has only been available in luxury cars. We don't recommend it. Tow truck operators tell us they get a lot of calls dealing with keyless starting systems. And we don't find them a big benefit. cargo versatility is a strong point for the versa hatchback. There's a generous 17. 8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place. Part of the reason for the spacious rear cargo bay is the careful design of the rear suspension so that no strut towers intrude into the interior. Nissan first used this system in the murano where it was so well integrated that some drivers never noticed it was anything other than a regular automatic. that's not to say a cvt is not as good as a conventional transmission, but it is different. It delivers a much smoother drive as there are no gears to change or hydraulics to slip. Instead, a segmented belt rides up and down on cone-shaped pulleys to vary the speed ratio between the engine and the drivetrain. It works more efficiently than a traditional automatic, which is why the versa equipped with a cvt delivers the best highway mileage.

Head-curtain side airbags are now standard on all models, as is a tire pressure monitor. Sport and 2lt come with stabilitrak electronic stability control. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are also standard on sport and 2lt, optional 400) on 1lt and ls; the system includes traction control on cobalts with automatic transmission. Onstar is standard on 2lt and sport, and optional 295) on 1lt. For 2008 it includes the general motors advanced automatic crash notification (aacn) system, making crash data available to participating 911 centers to help them dispatch the appropriate live-saving personnel and equipment. walkaroundthe chevy cobalt is built on gm's delta platform, which it shares with the domestic saturn astra and european-market opel astra. But with its single-bar grille and bowtie emblem, cobalt looks like a proper chevrolet small car right down to its shoes and socks. body panel fits are extremely tight. So tight, in fact, that there are no rubber trim gaskets around cobalt's compound complex headlamps. the fastback coupe bears a resemblance to the cavalier it replaced in 2005, right down to its high, rounded tail and triangular rear quarter windows; though in fact cobalt shares little with its predecessor but its looks. the cobalt sedan looks less like its curvier cavalier ancestor, and more like a contemporary small sedan, with a tall roofline and short, chunky tail. the coupe weighs about 50 pounds less than the sedan, although it's doubtful anyone but a professional race driver would feel the difference on the road. Same for the sedan's slightly better front-to-rear balance: 59/41 vs. 60/40 for the coupe. cobalt is longer, wider and lower than most of its direct competitors and its interior dimensions and trunk capacity are comparable for the class. interiorthe design theme inside the cobalt is simple and straightforward. Materials are decent and the fit and finish is good. Overall, it's comparable for the class. There's just enough chrome trim here and there on knobs and instruments to brighten things up without a lot of glare from the shiny parts. Instruments are large, well placed, and easy to read, with nice graphic treatment throughout. cobalt uses different seats in the different trim levels, each with detail changes in foam, padding and trim. We found plenty of fore/aft and rake adjustment for a 6-foot, 4-inch driver, plus seat height adjustment with a ratcheting handle. The lt seats were very comfortable and grabbed us in the fast corners exactly where we needed to be grabbed and held. Even better were the optional leather-trimmed seats, which come with electric heat. the available pioneer seven-speaker sound system with the delphi am/fm/cd delivers good sound and includes a huge subwoofer mounted on the left side trunk wall. For 2008, all cobalts now come with xm satellite radio. the heating, ventilation and defroster system worked quickly and intuitively. the ls comes with manually operated windows. The urethane steering wheel that comes on ls and lt models feels cheap. The leather-wrapped wheel that's standard on sport and optional on lt is much nicer. rear-seat passengers pay a price for the coupe's sporty looks. Headroom, legroom, and hip room are reduced by 2 inches, 1. 5 inches, and 3. 5 inches, respectively; enough to make the difference between a comfortable place for adults and one best left to pre-adolescents. Cobalt does not use space-eating gooseneck hinges on its decklid, opting instead for simple outside corner hinges and two hydraulic assist struts. The coupe has an even smaller trunk opening, making it difficult to stow a thick suitcase. A 60/40-split, fold-down rear seat with a trunk pass-through feature adds utility to both sedan and coupe. driving impressionthe chevrolet cobalt is quite pleasant to drive, especially the sport model. It's quiet for a car that retails for less than $20,000. Chevrolet put considerable effort into special door seals, sandwich steel panels, thick carpets and pads, noise blockers and noise absorbers throughout the front, middle and rear of the car. As a result, normal front-seat conversation is possible at speeds above 90 mph. the 2. 2-liter engine, which is rated at 148 horsepower is smooth, but does not feel powerful until it's revving high. The 171 developed by its 2. 4-liter engine is 16 percent more than the base engine produces. With 167 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm, the sport delivers only about 10 percent more torque than the base ls/lt. But then the 2. 4 has variable valve timing, which the 2. 2 does not, so the bigger engine should provide more flexibility across the whole rpm spectrum. That should make it easier to drive around town. the downside of the sport's 2. 4-liter engine is that its slightly higher compression ratio (10. 4:1, vs. 10. 0) pushes it over the line to where it needs premium fuel to perfo. The 2007 saturn aura is the company's first truly credible entry in the most competitive segment of the automobile market. Compared with saturn's last mid-size car, the unloved l-series sedan and wagon that died quiet deaths back in 2004, the aura is decidedly modern and fresh, with euro character and aesthetic flair. The more powerful xr features a 252-hp v6 and six-speed automatic. Both v6 engines offer good fuel economy, rated 20 mpg city and 28-29 mpg highway. the cabin is tastefully done and laid out well. All the controls work very well and the sound setup is particularly convenient. Saturn's interior materials are still behind the leaders in the segment, but the design is pleasing. We preferred the cloth over the standard leather option, but we liked the moroccan brown leather that's available on the aura xr model. underway, the saturn aura is quiet and handles well. We found it drives like a european family sedan, taut and responsive, with brakes, suspension and powertrain working together to respond to the driver's wishes. This is not surprising, given the aura shares its structure with the german opel vectra. lineupthe 2007 saturn aura comes in two trim levels, the base xe and the more powerful xr. Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, a tilt/telescope steering wheel, keyless entry, automatic headlights, cruise control, and a six-speaker sound system with cd/mp3 player. the aura xr 23,845) features a 252-hp v6 and a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control paddles on the steering wheel. The aura is based on the same platform as the current saab 9-3 and the europe-only opel vectra, the latter with which it shares many of its styling cues. in front, the aura features a broad grille with a thick chrome insert flanked by almond-shaped, multi-element headlamp units. The nicely sculpted front bumper houses tiny fog lamps on the aura xr. With big engines and front-wheel drive, the aura has a requisitely long nose, but thanks to nice tapering of the bumpers, it doesn't look disproportionately front-heavy. the bodysides are clean tastefully sculpted, with a healthy bit of chrome detailing on the door handles and window trim. The aura rides on a long, 112-inch wheelbase, which contributes to an elegant, planted appearance. Xr models ride on dressy 14-spoke, 18-inch machined-surface alloy wheels. Both glass roofs come with sun shades. The sun shade for the panoramic roof is motorized. the aura's rear end is dominated by glitzy, high-mounted taillamps that mirror the headlamps' almond shape while incorporating two strips of fast-illuminating led brake lights. The bumper is tall, which doesn't help loading cargo into the trunk in any way. The rear bumper has subtle cutouts to accommodate twin chrome exhaust tips. interiorthe interior of the saturn aura is tasteful, if somewhat bland, with an assortment of materials of mixed quality. Many secondary controls are shared with other models in the gm family, including the stereo, turn signal stalks and steering wheel. front seats offer reasonable support for most people, though we would like to see better lumbar support. We found the fabric upholstery to be of high quality. The quality of the optional leather on both the xe and xr seemed marginal, however, with the only exception being xr models equipped with the cool-looking moroccan brown interior featuring uniquely grained, embossed leather seating inserts. The available eight-way power adjustments for the driver made it easier to get comfortable than in the six-way manual seats. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes, though it feels one size too large for this car. At least with leather-equipped cars, the steering wheel feels good in the hand thanks to soft leather wrapping, which is far preferable to the grainy urethane texture of the wheel of cloth-equipped auras. ergonomics are quite good. The cover for the center console slides fore and aft for comfortable elbow resting on the inboard side. Outward vision through the windshield and side windows is good. A trip computer/vehicle information display is nestled in the speedometer. Therefore, only one aspect of the trip information (the trip odometer, standard odometer, fuel economy, the gear indicator for the manual mode for the xr's six-speed automatic, and so on) can be viewed at any given time. There are other materials as well, including generous swaths of silvery metallic or wood-grained plastic trim, made more attractive by chrome details in many well-placed locations. We would like to say that these materials are up to snuff compared with toyota, honda and even hyundai, but in truth, they're not quite there. At least the panel fit is tight and among the best we've seen on an american product. all controls, buttons and knobs feel upscale feel in their operation. Controls for the standard, six-speaker, am/fm/cd/mp3 stereo as well as the optional, 240-watt eight-speaker sound system with six-disc changer include presets that are not band-specific; in other words, am, fm and optional xm stations can exist in the same bank of buttons; no need to change bands. Also on the premium audio system are separate rear-seat audio controls with two infrared headphones. Best of all, all aura stereos come with auxiliary input jacks for ipods and other mp3 players. the aura does not offer an optional navigation system, but it does come with a year of onstar services, which now offer clever turn-by-turn directions. This navigational feature, offered on any vehicle with onstar 7. 0 and la.
